Highway 1

Hwy 1 is a single lane coastal highway running long ways all the way down the state of California and beyond. Cambria is fortunate to be at the southern gateway to the most famous section of highway 1, about 80 miles from the northern entrance in Big Sur. Highway 1 has many areas of interest including water falls, art galleries, hot springs, yurts, remote campgrounds, private beaches and much more.

It is non stop beauty on the second you begin your journey and is a popular drive for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. If you are prone to car sickness, consider yourself warned, the road is very curvy and is clinging to high cliffs much of the time. During the winter the road sees frequent landslides which often impair use of the road for as much as a week at a time. The only place to stop for gas before Big Sur is a small town called Gorda which clings to the cliff side. Gas prices in Gorda are rumored to be so high that it began circling the internet as the most expensive place to buy gasoline in the United States. KSBW News

A trip up to Big Sur from Cambria is about an hour and a half drive if you drive straight there. There is much to stop and see, so we highly recommend planning a full day to explore Hwy 1 and bring a camera.
